This podcast looks at comics from the perspective of being a fan, a creator and a critic.
Letters & Lines deep dives into the world of comics and how they’re made. It is designed for those who do not mind things getting a little technical now and then. In each episode hosts Aditya Bidikar and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou discuss a variety of themes and topics centred around comics. Topics include styles of lettering, the roles of a comic artist, storytelling, pitching, productivity and looking after yourself.
Both hosts are comics professionals and have worked for various publishers. Aditya Bidikar is a comic book letterer, writer and also creates fonts. He has lettered for Little Bird, Isola and Motor Crush.
Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou is comic book letterer, writer and filmmaker. He is also editor of the Eisner Award-winning digital magazine PanelxPanel, and has a video series on YouTube, called Strip Panel Naked, which takes a look at what makes the best comics work.
Currently, there are only 10 episodes, so you should go and listen to them all. However, here are some of our favourites:
- Episode 1 (the art of lettering and realistic vs graphic rendering)
- Episode 5 (lyrical dialogue and structuring first issues with writer Deniz Camp)
- Episode 7 (productivity, looking after yourself and creating works for a monthly market)
- Episode 8 (pitching in comics and retirement plans)
