Jon Foster

Jon Foster is an American freelance illustrator and sculptor based in Rhode Island, New England. He is best known for his lavish oil painted comic book covers for DC and Dark Horse Comics. Jon’s work has received recognition and awards from the Society of Illustrators, Dark Scribe Magazine, and the sci-fi and fantasy art publication, Spectrum.

Jon studied illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and graduated in 1989. Early in his career, Jon collaborated with famous Star Wars artist Dave Dorman. He illustrated for Magic: The Gathering, and role-playing games Dungeons & Dragons and Alternity. To date, Jon’s work has appeared in a number of publications including National Geographic, Tor Books, Boston Globe, Scholastic, Knopf and Little Brown.

In 2004, he returned to teach part-time at RISD. Additionally, Jon is a member of The Illustration Academy Faculty and travels to lecture at various schools around the country.

Jon paints with muted oils on canvas, typically incorporating motifs of good versus evil into his work. This sense of grandeur and adventure transports the viewer to another world. His harmonious tones accompanied with glowing yellows creates an ethereal atmosphere while his skewed proportioned figures and extreme angles add an undertone of unease.
