1. David Maingault

David Maingault is a French character designer, illustrator, and storyboard artist. Maingault has worked for Nickelodeon, Dreamworks, and Ankama. He is currently a Character Designer at Cartoon Network.

Maingault studied Animation at L’École des métiers du cinéma d’animation in Angoulême, France. His graduation film, Tacky, Sticky & Glutinous, depicted a man lost between his dreams and his frustrations. The short earned Maingault a lot of praise and was featured on many blogs. If you check out his Vimeo page you will find lots more great short and test animations he produced while studying.

Maingault has a terrific understanding of shapes. His figures are stretched, squashed, inflated and exaggerated. Astute distortion that helps to emphasise personality. Looking at his pieces, you will almost always be attracted to his character’s eyes. Sneaky or scared, Maingault knows how to have the eyes convey his characters’ thoughts, bringing them to life.
