“I’m an illustrator who specialises in mixed media painting on cardboard. My biggest passion is fetish and alternative fashion, lingerie and corsetry.”

Working on cardboard can involve creases and imperfections, which bring about some interesting results. There is a natural texture and colour which also plays a part in the final illustration. It’s great for the environment too; so that’s why I think Katrina’s work could inspire you. Why not give it a go? Get hold of some discarded material, whatever it may be—and draw all over it!

Fashion illustrator Insley Haynes is talented, sure. But aside from this, she has marketed herself…something that many illustrators seem to shy away from. In her own words:

“I founded Inslee By Design during my sophomore year at Washington & Lee University as an outlet for my love of illustration. I turned my sketches into a note card design business and ask my sorority sisters to help spread the news. That same winter I introduced my first yearly calendar… and the rest is history!”

Take a look at her website, where you will find her note cards and 2012 calendar for sale. There is definitely lesson to be learnt here; if something works, keep doing it.

Kime Buzzelli’s drawings are often enhanced with mixed media, turning what was 2d into 3d, something you can feel. This is a nice touch, especially with something like fashion illustration, where the fabrics and various materials don’t translate as well as a sketch or watercolour.

Kime was born in Ohio and currently resides in Joshua Tree, CA. Where she is working as Costume Designer for 90210.
