Almost two decades before Norman Rockwell, J.C. Leyendecker was synonymous with The Saturday Evening Post, producing over 300 cover illustrations for the magazine. I love his super stylish and super cool male protagonist he paints, and the way his work invites you in. There is a nice collection of his work here and here, but for a truly amazing collection check out this J.C. Leyendecker book.

I have that Leyendecker book and its great! Though the writer did have a major hate-on for Rockwell and comes close to calling him a thief (Rockwell and Leyendecker were very close friends and when Leyendecker passed, Rockwell was one of the few people that showed for the funeral) which is the only thing I find taints the book.

Hi Robert, all the Loungers have nothing but respect and love for both Leyendecker and Rockwell. It was not my intention at all to accuse Rockwell of stealing, nor do I find that it is implied. I was merely drawing a parallel between the two artist’s careers.

We have posted about Rockwell here – http://illustratorslounge.com/painting/norman-perceval-rockwell-1834-1978
