Marijke Buurlage is a Dutch illustrator based in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. She has worked on children’s books, editorials, packaging and apps for clients including Adobe, Swatch, Solberg & Hansen and DOT Magazine. Her vibrant and playful work has earned the recognition of 3×3 Magazine, Boekie Boekie stArt Award and Fontanel Young Talent Award.

Buurlage studied Illustration at the Dutch art school Academy Minerva in Groningen. She graduated in 2013 and immediately transitioned to working as a freelance illustrator. In addition to client work, she has focused on side-projects and creating illustrated products of her own. Which you can find on Etsy.

Most of Buurlage’s illustrations start with a rough sketch on the computer. She then chooses a colour palette, usually no more than seven different colours. She begins the final version by drawing all elements with a marker or a brush on paper. Finally, she digitally colours and arranges all the elements to build bright and layered scenes filled with fun and foliage.
