Yukari Masuike aka Toronn is a freelance illustrator and concept artist based in Japan. She has worked with top video game companies Capcom, Square Enix, and Bandai Namco Games. You may also recognise her work from 3DTotal’s Prime – The Definitive Digital Art Collection.

Masuike studied oil painting at Musashino Art University. Her first professional job was illustrating Capcom’s Monster Hunter Hunting Card Game . She quickly transitioning to background illustration, item, character, and monster design.

Some notable titles Masuike has worked on include Rage of Bahamut (2012) for Cygames, Animal Kaiser (2014) for Bandai Namco Games, Bravely Second: End Layer (2015) for Square Enix, and most recently World of Final Fantasy (2016) for Square Enix.

Use pencil, gouache, Indian ink, and photoshop, Masuike creates incredibly realistic work. Some of it very polished and airy. Some of it rigid and dramatic. For her more expressive pieces, she creates texture with thick short strokes and builds form with crisscrossing colours. I am loving the looseness of her newer work, seen in Riding horse on the freezing day and Sheep and Sheepdogs, and really enjoy watching her style evolve.

You can find more of Yukari Masuike’s work on her website, Tumblr, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Instagram and follower her on Twitter.
