1. Manga Mondays ~ Ryan Atendido

Ryan Atendido is a freelance Digital Artist and Illustrator from Manila, Philippines. He designs for world building, specialising in environments and scenes. He studied Animation at De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in 2014.

Like many, Atendido spent his childhood glued to the cartoon channels. He especially enjoyed the behind-the-scenes segments of the programs and was inspired to pursue a career in art after watching behind the scenes footage of Toy Story. However, he only really focused on drawing once he started university.

His fascinating and often complex illustrations are created using the 3D modeling software, Sketch Up. They are then taken into Photoshop where he add the flourish bringing the scene to life. If you look closely, you can spot the 3D rendered elements in his final work.

Atendido’s artwork consists of brightly coloured landscapes. His buildings contain an absurd amount of architectural detailing. He balances the cold monotonous aspect of a building with rich plant growth. Leaves, shrubs and vines invade settings to an almost surreal end. His outdoor scenes are humanised further using the glow of sunlight or lanterns. The final touch is his oddball characters. With the exception of a focal character, they become as much part of the background as the structures they are surrounded by. They bring his scenes greater energy and create a deeper narrative.
